Adding binding to your Easy Quilted Envelope Case is a breeze! The only thing that changes is the way the pieces are laid out. Without the binding, you lay fabric pieces right sides together—with the binding, you lay them wrong sides together. Easy Peasy💕
Step 1: Follow the steps outlined in the Making an Easy Envelope Pillow Case tutorial until Step 3. Then, come back here to finish up with the binding instructions.
Step 2: Assemble the Pillow Case for Binding
Place the left envelope piece on top of the quilted pillow top with wrong sides together, aligning the raw edges.
Do the same with the right envelope piece and pin or Wonder Clip around the perimeter.
*Note:Â Because of the faux fur fabric, I used pins and Wonder Clips for extra stabilization. This helps keep the layers in place and prevents shifting while sewing.
Sew ¼ " seam around the perimeter of your envelope case.
Step 3: Attach the Binding
Using ⅜" seam allowance, attach your binding to the top of your quilted envelope pillowcase with raw edges together.
*Note:Â I used a single-fold binding strip. For detailed steps, refer to How to Make and Attach Binding.
*Note: I used bias binding to achieve this cool diagonal look. Check out How to Make Your Own Bias Binding for a complete tutorial and video.
I forgot to trim the ends of my bias binding before I attached it to my quilted pillowcase. To connect the two ends of your bias binding, cut the 45° angle off on both ends.
Trim the binding tails so they overlap by the exact measurement as the width of your binding strips. I cut my binding strips at 2½".
Bring the bottom strip to the top strip, join right sides together, and pin in place.
Sew them together on the diagonal from the top left corner down to the right bottom corner.
*Note: To sew without marking your fabric, check out the tutorial Diagonal Seam Tape | The Ultimate Time-Saving Tool for Quilting and Sewing
Trim the excess fabric, leaving ¼" seam allowance. Finger-press your seam and cut off dog ears.
Continue sewing the binding strip to the starting point. Backstitch to secure.
*Note:Â For a complete guide on joining the ends and attaching the binding, refer to How to Make and Attach Single-Fold Binding.
Step 4: Attach the binding to the back from the front side of your quilted pillowcase.
Press your binding away from your quilted top.
Turn your pillowcase over to attach the binding to the backside. Because this is faux fur, I did not use my normal method of glue-basting and ironing.
Fold the binding over to match up with the raw edges of your quilted pillow case, and finger press.
Secure in place with Wonder Clips or pins.
To miter the corners, finger-press the folded edges on both sides. Â Then, tuck down the fabric that wraps around the corner.
Finger-press one edge to create the 45° angle.
Fold the opposite edge to align with the first fold, creating a neat mitered corner.
Secure in place with Wonder Clips or pins.
Continue this around the perimeter of your quilted pillowcase.
Use an edge foot or shift your sewing needle to sew right along the binding edge—basically stitching in the ditch. Sew around the perimeter and back over the starting stitches. Backstitch to secure in place.
*Note:Â For a complete guide on attaching the binding, refer to How to Make and Attach Binding.
Step 5: Stuff Your Pillow Insert in That Beautiful Binded Envelope Pillow Case.
